Why Check Engine Lights Turn On

Your car has hundreds of sensors running through it, keeping an eye on all sorts of metrics about your vehicle. They all have normal ranges in which their readings should be, and when a reading is outside of normal ranges, they send a code to the computer. When the computer receives this code, it logs the code to be read by a technician and then turns on the check engine light. Since there are so many sensors, it's hard to say exactly which one turned on the light until diagnosed.
