The Cost of Hybrid & EV Service vs. Gas

At our Toyota dealership in Victorville, we understand uncertainty California drivers may feel as we move toward a future where electric and hybrid vehicles become more prominent. These low-to-zero-emission vehicles will help steer us into a greener future and help save you money at the pump, but what about when you require auto service for a hybrid vehicle? How do EV maintenance costs compare to auto service for gas-powered vehicles? At Valley Hi Toyota, we're here to answer all your questions, from whether EVs require oil changes to how the costs of hybrid car service compares to gas.

Do electric cars need oil changes?

No. Since electric vehicles are powered by an electric motor vs. an engine, oil changes are not required on EVs. Hybrid vehicles, however, do require oil changes and often have similar service intervals when compared to their gas counterparts.

Does it cost more to maintain a hybrid car or electric vehicle?

Not usually. With fewer moving parts and fluids, EV service costs are generally lower in comparison to gas service prices. A from June 2021 outlines that the estimated scheduled maintenance cost of a light-duty battery-electric vehicle is less than $0.07 per mile. Meanwhile, a standard internal combustion engine costs approximately $0.10 per mile to maintain.

Is it cheaper to drive a hybrid or EV?

While electric cars and hybrid vehicles require similar services to gas models, such as tire rotations and brake replacements, they still possess fewer fluids and internal parts in comparison. This makes them cheaper to maintain in the long run.
