The sleek RAV4-sized crossover with almost no front grille you see in the Valley Hi Toyota lot is the bZ4X, which is nothing less than Toyota’s first dedicated all-electric vehicle. Breaking down the name, “bZ” refers to “Beyond Zero,” which is Toyota’s vision to reach beyond carbon neutrality with its products, services, and operations. “4” indicates the model’s size on a global scale, indicating there could be electric models both larger and smaller than the bZ 4X in the future. Finally, “X” indicates its status as a crossover.

bZ4X crossover features top performance and technology and a top EV choice from Toyota.

Designed for Driving in the Real World

The bZ4X isn’t designed to beat supercars on the dragstrip. Nor will it take you three times longer than your bladder without a stop. Instead, It is designed to carry five people and cargo and deftly carry out your day-to-day transportation needs without emitting a smidgen of carbon or any other emissions. Like most other crossovers, it is available with all-wheel drive (AWD) for improved traction in poor weather conditions or front-wheel drive (FWD) for greater efficiency. With a Level 2 home charger, you can fully charge in 9 hours and leave each morning with 222 to 252 miles of range, depending on the grade. That should be more than enough for your daily routine, and in the process, you will be getting 131 MPGe in the city and up to 107 MPGe on the highway, according to the EPA.

You can use your bZ4X on longer trips by simply planning your recharging ahead of time. Find a DC fast charger by a restaurant and charge up to 80% while you eat. (charging from 80 to 100% can double that time, so charging to 80% is the recommendation). Charge at an EVgo station, and it is free for a year after purchasing or leasing your bZ4X.

The Toyota of Electric Cars

Extensive cargo space available in the all new bZ4X, EV from Toyota.

Fortunately, for long trips or short, the bZ4X is a pleasant place to sit in and drive. You have a smooth, quiet, maintenance-free drivetrain with notable pep for normal driving. The interior is spacious, with plenty of space for five, including a flat floor for the rear-center passenger. Making the vehicle feel even more spacious is the Panoramic sunroof that is standard on all models. Behind the rear passengers is 38.1 cubic feet of cargo space which increases to 56.0 cubic feet when the rear seat is folded.

Interior technology in the bZ4X from Toyota.

A 7-inch digital gauge display is high-mounted to minimize the driver’s diversion from the road. The center console sweeps upward to culminate a standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that can also be seen and operated at a glance. Standard wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatibility means you don’t have to reach for your phone when getting in your car or remember not to leave it behind when you leave. With your phone, FM, or SiriusXM satellite radio as your source, you can listen through the standard 6-speaker audio system or a 9-speaker JBL system on the Limited grade.

Naturally, the bZ4X has the latest in Toyota’s safety and driver assistance technologies with standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes the following:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)
  •  Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA)
