J.D. Power has released the results of its latest Vehicle Dependency Study and, as usual, Toyota models did amazingly. Four Toyota models had the best dependability ratings in their respective classes. Ironically, the model that tied for the greatest dependability of all models in the study is the C-HR, which Toyota has since replaced with the CorollaCross.
Covering 3-Years of Ownership
The J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study(VDS) surveys original owners of 3-year-old vehicles and asks them to state what problems they experienced across their 3-year ownership. Reported problem symptoms are sorted into nine vehicle system categories:
- Exterior
- Driving Experience
- Features/Controls/Displays (FCD)
- Driving Assistance
- Infotainment
- Seats
- Climate
- Interior
- Powertrain
The models are then rated by a score of Problems Per 100 models. These scores are then announced to the public. The full study with detailed reports on what kind of problems occurred on each model is purchased by manufacturers to help them determine where they need to focus their quality control attention. The top-ranking C-HR and Lexus RX each had a PP100 score of 111. That is just a little over one problem per car across three years. The industry average in this latest study was a PP100 of 186.
The list of Toyota models that had the fewest problems in their class is:
- Toyota C-HR (Small SUV)
- Toyota Highlander (Upper Midsize SUV)
- Toyota Sienna (Minivan)
- Toyota Tacoma (Midsize Pickup)
