The Toyota GR Supra represents a couple of things at once. The “Supra” part casts it as a return of Toyota’s highest-level sport coupe that traces its origin to the 1979 model year as an inline-6-cylinder version of the Celica line, back when the Celica had rear-wheel drive. The Supra shared its platform and most of its sheet metal with the Celica for two generations before splitting off on its own for the 1986 model year. The GR Supra represents the 5th generation or Mark V version of the Supra line.

Then there is the “GR” part which means that it is Gazoo Racing’s best execution of a high-performance sports car for the street. Gazoo Racing’s Supra has two engines to emphasize two expressions of performance. The attention-getter is the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-6 with an output of 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque.  The turbocharged 4-cylinder model has an emphasis on handling and balance with 255 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque and a curb weight that is 200 pounds less than the 3.0 models, with much of that weight coming off the front.  For 2024, the GR Supra brings additional fun to the line.

Three Liters With Three Pedals

The biggest news for many traditional enthusiasts is the new availability of a manual transmission on both 3.0 and 3.0 Premium grades. Toyota Gazoo Racing engineers teamed up with German transmission specialist ZF to build a gearbox designed specifically to suit the power and torque characteristics of the GR Supra’s 3.0-liter 382-hp straight-six engine. The bespoke clutch features a large friction area and strong springing to give it the high-performance capability needed for GR Supra’s high-torque engine.

Though manual, the gearbox features Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) programming so that when upshifted, engine torque is optimized at the moment of clutch engagement and release. On downshifts, the software includes rev-matching for consistent performance. The iMT is set as the default, but, if the driver prefers, it can be switched off in Individual Mode.

45th Anniversary Edition

In celebration of its 1979 introduction, the 2024 GR Supra gains a 45th Anniversary Edition, which is available with the 3.0 Premium with the 8-speed automatic as its base. The 45th Anniversary Edition gains a large, manually adjustable rear spoiler. It rises about three inches above the rear decklid and with an adjustable angle setting to allow drivers to determine the amount of downforce being applied to the rear wheels. The edition also features matte-black finished 19-inch aluminum wheels and black-painted, opposite-mounted brake calipers with the fronts sporting a GR logo. A black side panel graphic with a cutout Supra logo sweeps upward along the side, matching the rest of the model’s black accents. The 45th Anniversary is available in either the Absolute Zero white or the newly introduced and exclusive Mikan Blast (pronounced as Mee-kahn]), which is an extremely bright orange that brings to mind the Mark IV Supra featured at the beginning of a certain well-known movie series.
