Performance

The 4Runner i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is focused on increasing power without increasing fuel consumption. It combines the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor feeding from a 1.87-kWh nickel–metal hydride battery for a total powertrain output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, which is by far the most potent powertrain ever offered in a 4Runner. It is connected to the same 8-speed transmission.  The hybrid system increases city mpg over non-hybrid 4WD models from 20 to 23, while maintaining the same highway mpg at 24, resulting in a combined figure of 23.

The sixth-generation 4Runner chassis is more durable than ever. It features a double-wishbone independent front suspension and a five-link, coil-sprung solid rear axle. Since the stabilizer bar effectively reduces body roll on highway curves but can restrict wheel articulation off-road, the available Stabilizer Disconnecting system lets you disconnect it at the push of a button. The Multi-Terrain system can adjust throttle, transmission, and traction control settings for specific terrains and now functions in both 4WD High and 4WD Low.

All i-FORCE MAX models come with standard 4WD featuring an automatic limited-slip differential, an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), and an automatic limited-slip differential. The more off-road-focused trims, such as the TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro, include an electronic locking rear differential. Trailhunter and TRD Pro each have mission-specific dampers, skid plates, high-clearance bumpers, and other features tailored to their respective missions.

Exterior

A Michigan-based CALTY design team created the sixth-generation 4Runner’s innovative blend of the current Tacoma and traditional 4Runner styling cues. Inspired by desert racing, the overall appearance is rugged with refined details that vary significantly across the six non-hybrid grades. The raised rear quarter windows, which extend onto the roof, pay homage to the first and second-generation designs, and the opening window on the tailgate has long been a 4Runner signature feature.

Interior

The 4Runner dashboard will look familiar to anyone well-acquainted with the new Tacoma. Storage spaces are abundant and easily accessible to the driver. An optional third-row seat is available on SR5 and Limited trims, which can be particularly useful when a trip requires more than five passengers. The 4Runner is not a convertible, but dropping all side windows, the tailgate window, and opening the sunroof can get you close.

Technology

The TRD Off-Road features an 8.0-inch infotainment display, while all other i-FORCE models come with a 14-inch screen. All models feature an intuitive and responsive operating system. Each includes wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, USB-C ports, and a digital key system that lets you lock, unlock, and start the 4Runner using a smartphone app. Standard on all i-FORCE models is a 12.3-inch digital, customizable gauge cluster, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Safety and Driver Assistance

All 4Runners come standard with the latest version of the Toyota Safety Sense, TSS 3.0. This suite of safety and driver assistance technology includes:

• Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control  
• Lane Tracing Assist  
• Road Sign Assist  
• Automatic High Beams  
• Proactive Driving Assist (PDA)

The PDA system detects pedestrians and cyclists in intersections and applies braking if necessary. The system can also apply gentle braking in curves when Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is used.

Also available is a blind spot monitoring system to help detect vehicles behind you in adjacent lanes and a Rear Cross-Traffic alert to warn you of approaching vehicles when backing out of a parking space.
