In 1995, Toyota introduced something entirely new. It resembled an SUV, many of which had appeared in the previous decade. However, it featured unibody construction like most cars, whereas SUVs traditionally had truck-like body-on-frame construction. It was equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD), which could be used on pavement, and models without AWD had front-wheel drive (FWD), marking a first for SUVs. They named it the RAV4, an abbreviation for “Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive,” though the name applied to both AWD and FWD models.

With the RAV4, Toyota pioneered the crossover SUV, a vehicle category that has since dominated the industry, from sub-compacts to large three-row models. Although initially available with two or four doors, the four-door quickly gained popularity. Over its first five design generations, the RAV4 has become increasingly sophisticated, versatile, and popular. When the Camry stopped being the best-selling passenger car in the country, it was because the RAV4 took over that title, which it has held for the last eight years. Now, for 2026, Toyota has introduced the sixth-generation RAV4, which is completely redesigned.

What’s New

Everything. The exterior and interior are all completely new. Like the latest Camry, all RAV4 models now feature electrified powertrains, either hybrid or plug-in hybrid, both of which have been upgraded. The lineup has been restructured with more choices and new grades. A completely new software system supports the new infotainment system and is the backbone of the launch for the new Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 suite of safety and driver assistance technologies. The only thing that remains unchanged is RAV4’s core mission: to deliver comfortable, capable, and high-quality transportation for five passengers and/or cargo under all weather conditions and across various terrains.

Performance

As mentioned, every 2026 RAV4 has either a hybrid or plug-in hybrid drivetrain, with the latter being discussed separately. The hybrid models combine the sixth-generation Toyota Hybrid System with a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine, delivering a total system horsepower of 236 with AWD models (17 hp more than before) and 226 with FWD. Yes, for the first time, the RAV4 hybrid will be available with efficient FWD in the LE, XLE, and SE grades. AWD is standard on the Limited, XSE, Woodland, and the new GR Sport grade, the last of which is exclusively available as a plug-in hybrid.

As of this writing, Toyota has not announced fuel mileage estimates, but figures can be expected to match or better the 41 city, 38 highway, and 39 combined EPA estimates of the 2025 RAV4 hybrid AWD.

The suspension system features MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link setup in the rear, both calibrated for improved responsiveness and agile handling while maintaining a smooth ride. Once exclusive to the Woodlands model, all 2026 AWD RAV4s will be able to tow 3,500 pounds. FWD models have a maximum towing capacity of 1,750 pounds.

Exterior

All new RAV4 models sport a blockier appearance with an ascending beltline and more upright rear pillars, creating larger rear quarter windows. Retained are the half-hexagon fender openings accented by varying degrees of cladding, with both front and rear fenders bulging outward from the body for a planted stance. The RAV4 will wear many faces with distinct Core, Rugged, and Sport designs that differ primarily in the front. At the top of the front, all designs feature a rectilinear variation of the “hammerhead” headlight treatment found across several Toyota passenger car model lines. Core models, which include LE. XLE and Limited grades feature an integrated body color grille.

Exclusive to the Woodland grade, the Rugged design divides the grille into upper and lower sections, with integrated Rigid Industries LED lighting on the lower part and a more rugged lower edge. The model also sits about half an inch higher thanks to standard All-Terrain tires, and it comes with standard raised roof rails with crossbars, along with a 1¼-inch rear activity mount for travel-ready versatility. The Sport trim on the SE and XSE models features a black single-piece grille, up to 20-inch wheels, and several two-tone exterior paint options.

Interior

The dash shape reflects the clean, rectilinear exterior design. All models now come equipped with a 12.3-inch customizable digital driver’s display. Prominently positioned in the center of the dashboard is either a 10.5-inch or 12.9-inch touchscreen, depending on the grade. The lower edge of the touchscreen includes fixed HVAC controls with physical buttons and a center-mounted volume knob in the bottom frame. There are two storage levels where the dash meets the center console. The upper level is intended to hold two smartphones and is bordered by protruding controls for drive modes, including an EV-only setting. Controls for driver assistance features, traction control, and camera systems are located on the center console.

Seating surfaces will vary from fabric on LE and SE models to SofTex® with available colors like black, light gray, or a new Mineral shade on the Woodland. The Woodland interior also features additional elements for a lively, outdoor-inspired cabin, such as uniquely patterned perforated soft-touch door and dash panels, red-orange accents, and standard Woodland-exclusive all-weather floor and cargo mats. The XSE grade offers a mix of SofTex and Ultrasuede® seating surfaces.

Technology

The RAV4 introduces the Arene software platform, which is the foundation of the new multimedia system. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It can connect two devices at once via Bluetooth, allowing the driver to answer a call even while another phone or device is playing music. Whether you are using a smartphone or the native system, a permanent Home button will always bring you back to the main menu. The native Voice Assistant has been improved with better voice recognition clarity and faster response times. The onboard navigation system display can be viewed in the digital gauge cluster.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The new Arene software system also powers the latest Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 system. As of now, Toyota has not explained the full extent of this system, but it is expected to include all of the features from the 3.0 system, such as:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist (PDA)
