Performance

All 2026 4Runners are powered by an i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine. Even the hybrid models (covered separately) use this engine as the core of their drivetrain. Non-hybrid models produce 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, figures that exceed the 4.0-liter V6 from the previous generation. The engine is paired with an 8-speed transmission, sending power to the rear wheels or all four, depending on the model.

The sixth-generation 4Runner chassis is more durable than ever. It features a double-wishbone independent front suspension and a five-link, coil-sprung solid rear axle. Since the stabilizer bar effectively reduces body roll on highway curves but can restrict wheel articulation off-road, the available Stabilizer Disconnecting system lets you disconnect it at the push of a button. The Multi-Terrain system can adjust throttle, transmission, and traction control settings for specific terrains and now functions in both 4WD High and 4WD Low.

The model line includes 2WD, part-time 4WD, and Full-time 4WD. 2WD models are equipped with an automatic limited-slip differential. All 4WD models feature an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low ranges, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), and an automatic limited-slip differential. All of the off-road-focused grades, such as TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium, include an electronic locking rear differential, off-road dampers, and other hardware specific to their mission.

Exterior

A Michigan-based CALTY design team created the sixth-generation 4Runner’s artful combination of the current Tacoma and traditional 4Runner styling cues. Inspired by desert racing, the overall look is rugged with refined details that differ significantly among the six non-hybrid grades. The raised rear quarter windows, which wrap around to the roof, are a nod to the first and second-generation designs, and the opening window on the tailgate has long been a 4Runner tradition.

Interior

The 4Runner dashboard will look familiar to anyone well-acquainted with the new Tacoma. Storage spaces are abundant and easily accessible to the driver. An optional third-row seat is available on SR5 and Limited trims, which can be particularly useful when a trip requires more than five passengers. The 4Runner is not a convertible, but dropping all side windows, the tailgate window, and opening the sunroof can get you close.

Technology

The sixth-generation 4Runner has notable upgrades in cabin tech. An 8.0-inch infotainment display is available on the SR5 and TRD Sport trims, while other grades come with a 14-inch screen. All models feature an intuitive and responsive operating system. Each includes wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, USB-C ports, and a digital key system that lets you lock, unlock, and start the 4Runner using a smartphone app. Higher trims also feature a 12.3-inch digital, customizable gauge cluster. Additionally, a wireless smartphone charging pad is available as an optional feature.

Safety and Driver Assistance

All 4Runners come standard with the latest version of the Toyota Safety Sense, TSS 3.0. This suite of safety and driver assistance technology includes:

• Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control  
• Lane Tracing Assist  
• Road Sign Assist  
• Automatic High Beams  
• Proactive Driving Assist (PDA)

The PDA system detects pedestrians and cyclists in intersections and applies braking if necessary. The system can also apply gentle braking in curves when Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is used.  

Also available is a blind spot monitoring system to help detect vehicles behind you in adjacent lanes and a Rear Cross-Traffic alert to warn you of approaching vehicles when backing out of a parking space.
