Indiana Toyota Plant Celebrates its Millionth Hybrid Model

Toyota has the Bz4X aimed directly at the popular compact crossover market, and other EV models are on the way. However, it has been clear that Toyota has not been as bullish on EVs as other manufacturers. When asked about this, the response from the world’s largest car maker has been that it is better for the environment to build millions of hybrids than a few tens of thousands of EVs. In that vein, Valley Hi Toyota is pleased to report that one of its plants in Princeton, Indiana, has celebrated the production of its millionth hybrid model. 

The plant worker driving a Wind Chill Pearl 2025 Sienna Platinum honked its horn and flashed its lights to celebrate its status as the millionth hybrid model to roll off the Princeton assembly line. All Sienna models have hybrid drivetrains. What started with the Prius in 2001 has grown to six Toyota 100% hybrid model lines, including most recently the Camry. Of course, it doesn’t stop there—Toyota has hybrid versions of every model it makes (except for the GR86, the GR Supra sports cars, and the emission-free Bz4X EV and Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell sedan).   

The Sienna is especially well-suited for hybrid use. Minivan driving often involves numerous daily trips around town, where stop-and-go traffic leads to extensive brake use and thus regenerative braking to keep the batteries charged, achieving 36 mpg. They are also likely to be the preferred vehicle for long trips, where the small-displacement engine can cruise at highway speeds and still deliver 36 mpg, making such journeys less costly. The Sienna is also the only minivan on the market that combines a hybrid drivetrain with all-wheel drive, making it the perfect family vehicle to keep you on the road in any weather—athough snow tires are still recommended in snowy climates. 

“It’s a significant achievement to reach this milestone and something our team members should be proud of,” said Jason Puckett, president of Toyota Indiana. “The all-hybrid Sienna demonstrates our commitment to electrification and remains a top-selling vehicle in Toyota’s lineup.” 

The Princeton plant is part of Toyota’s investment in the U.S., which includes 11 manufacturing facilities across the country that produce a wide variety of vehicles and components. In addition to Indiana, these facilities are located in Alabama, California, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, which assembles the Camry, RAV4, and Lexus ES, as well as engines, is the largest Toyota plant in the world. 

Toyota’s bet on hybrids has paid off, with hybrid sales growing globally by 21% in 2024. Many people are ready for electrification, but they are not willing to be fully dependent on the charging infrastructure as it stands in the U.S.
