Off-Road Features of the Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter

The overlanding set has been duly rewarded with a vehicle that speaks to its want of absolute adventure—the 2025 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter. Building on the strength of our best-selling pickup truck in its class, it was developed to handle specific off-road tasks while giving you everything you need for any adventure.

A truck developed for a specific kind of adventure must have the right equipment. TheDrive.com checked out the unique features of the 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter to see how they function on our overlanding rig.

One of the first things you will notice is mounted alongside the passenger-side A-pillar. The high-mount air intake allows for air to still enter into the engine bay through the air cleaner box when the Tacoma Trailhunter is submerged into water. Although water fording is rated below the door sill, the i-FORCE MAX engine still needs to breathe. The high-mount air intake also works in dusty conditions out in the high desert, filtering out the sand from the engine bay.

An overlanding pickup truck must be protected from everything—rocks, ruts, trees, and all other obstacles. Toyota brought in ARB to build out exclusive add-ons to help protect the 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter from everything. The company supplies a heavier grade of skid plates and underframe armor that will repel pebbles and rocks, keeping the rest of the Tacoma damage free. Protection also includes specific rear bumpers, tow hooks, and a step bar below the cab’s doors.

ARB also developed a sport bar that is attached to the bed, serving as functional protection. The sport bar can anchor bed accessories including canopies, bike racks, ladders, camping equipment, external lights, and so forth. These accessories are part of the Associated Accessory Program that offers over 100 add-ons to your 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter.

The 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter is also equipped with additional external lighting made for night exploration. An LED light bar is inserted into the grille for improved frontal vision. There are also RIGID Industries color selectable LED fog lamps. Additional external lighting around the bed points outward for campsite illumination or to assist on-trail repairs of your pickup truck. They are among several functions that can be controlled from a bank of switches inside of the Trailhunter’s cabin.

For additional power, a 2,400W AC inverter provides juice to two locations in the cabin and the rear deck, where both 12V and USBs can also be found to power other devices such as an ARB Fridge Freezer. The Trailhunter also comes pre-wired for accessories with three auxiliary toggle switches on the dashboard.

Seeing your way around obstacles is important when you’re overlanding or exploring off the highway. The 14.0-inch multimedia display becomes the home of the Multi-Terrain Monitor. This display can show you every angle of your 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter to make sure you can clear those obstacles. These camera angles serve as an extra set of eyes when you need them the most.

Above all, you want to be entertained. On top of the dashboard is the JBL FLEX Bluetooth portable speaker. You can keep it in place as the center channel speaker for the JBL audio system, or you can detach it to keep the music going for up to six hours. If you drop the portable speaker into the water, it will be fine as long as it does not go beyond three feet deep.
