The people at Torque News wondered if they would like the Grand Highlander as much as its owners. They received a 2025 model with the Hybrid MAX driveline and all-wheel drive. Their initial thoughts were based on their journalist’s experiences with owning Highlanders in the past. They even called themselves a “Highlander snob.”
How well did the Grand Highlander pass the muster of a “long-time Highlander owner?”
The 2025 Grand Highlander offers space for up to eight passengers. That passenger space alone is enormous, with up to 153 cubic feet and a comfortable third row. In turn, it offers exceptional cargo space, with up to 97.5 cubic feet with both the second- and third-row seats lowered.
For the reviewer, the “surprise” was the Hybrid MAX driveline. The combined turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with an electric motor is rated for 362 net combined horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The reviewer remarked that with the Hybrid MAX driveline, “you have both strength and efficiency in one package. And this one can use regular fuel. That makes the Hybrid Max an 11-cent-per-mile vehicle…amazing for a large 3-row SUV.”
For a larger SUV, Torque News found that the Grand Highlander “drives quite nicely, I found it very easy to park, and the bigness is done so well that you have to just admire the packaging and say, ‘whelp, it’s a great job.’” It is an easy-to-park SUV that fits well in parking lots and on the street.
The driver is greeted with an advanced digital instrument cluster and a large 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen hosting various connectivity options. You have the peace of mind of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes features such as Traffic Jam Assist, a Panoramic View Monitor, and a Digital Rearview Mirror.
In summary, Torque News stated, “The Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX is a comfortable, competent driver in every situation. It’s smooth, quiet, easy to drive, and delivers a very satisfying driving experience. If you have more than two children, this long-time Highlander owner would suggest getting the Grand Highlander. The space is well worth it. We give the Hybrid MAX version two thumbs up.”
The Hybrid MAX driveline is available in Limited and Platinum grades.
