Toyota Prius Recall: Rear Door Switch Fix for Victor Valley Owners
Toyota has recalled about 141,000 Prius models for a rear door switch that water can short-circuit. Here is how to check your VIN and get the free repair at Valley Hi Toyota in Victorville.
If you drive a Prius in Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley or Adelanto, this recall is worth a few minutes today. Toyota has recalled certain 2023 to 2026 Prius models because water can get into a rear door opener switch and cause a rear door to open unexpectedly. The repair is free at a Toyota dealer, and you can find out right now whether your car is included.
Which Toyota Prius models are part of this recall?
According to Toyota’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall covers certain Prius vehicles built from October 11, 2022 to November 3, 2025. What can happen with the Prius rear door switch?
Toyota says water can get into the rear door opener switch and cause a short circuit that activates it. That can happen if repeated heating and cooling wears down the switch seal, or if a large amount of water splashes onto the switch and the door is closed with high force. Water that contains a surfactant, like car wash detergent, can cause the short.
The fault can only happen when the rear door is unlocked. If it does, a rear door could open unexpectedly while you are driving. Toyota says the driver would get a warning on the instrument panel, and a buzzer sounds if the vehicle is moving. As of its filing, Toyota reported no injuries.
I already had the earlier Prius door recall done. Do I need this one too?
Possibly, yes. In 2024, Toyota recalled about 56,000 2023 and 2024 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles for a similar rear door switch problem, and dealers replaced the switches. Reports on the new recall say it expands on and replaces that earlier campaign, so vehicles that already had the first repair may still need the new one. Check your VIN to see where your car stands.
How do I check my VIN for the Toyota Prius recall?
You do not need to wait for a letter. Toyota set owner notification letters to begin mailing March 15, 2026, but a VIN lookup takes about a minute.
- Find your 17-character VIN on the driver side of the dashboard or on your registration
- Enter it at toyota.com/recall
- Or enter it at nhtsa.gov/recalls
- Call Toyota Customer Service at 1-800-331-4331 if you want to confirm by phone

Is the Prius recall repair free, and what happens at the appointment?
Yes. Toyota says dealers will modify the left and right rear door switch circuits so the switch cannot activate, even if a short circuit occurs. The repair is free of charge. Our Service team can tell you how long the visit should take and whether anything else is due while the car is here, like an oil change or tire rotation.
Valley Hi Toyota serves drivers across the High Desert, including Hesperia, Apple Valley, Adelanto and the rest of the Victor Valley.
What can I do until my Prius is repaired?
For the earlier 2024 recall, Toyota advised owners to avoid large water splashes at the rear doors, such as pressure washing or automatic car washes, and to turn on automatic door locking when shifting out of Park through the head unit. Ask our Service team whether the same steps apply to your Prius while you wait for your appointment. Keeping rear doors locked is also a good habit when you have passengers.
