2027 Toyota Corolla Cross & Hybrid: What’s New
2027 Toyota Corolla Cross and Corolla Cross Hybrid: What’s New and Which One Fits Your High Desert Drive
Same compact SUV you know, a simpler hybrid lineup, and a real choice between gas and hybrid power.
The 2027 Toyota Corolla Cross is heading into its sixth year, and Toyota has kept the formula steady: a compact SUV with an elevated seating position, folding rear seats, and your choice of gas or hybrid power. If you already know the 2026 model, this update is mostly about the hybrid lineup getting simpler. Here is what changed, what carried over, and how to decide between gas and hybrid for life in Victorville, Hesperia, and Apple Valley.
All details below come from Toyota’s October 2026 announcement. Toyota says 2027 models are expected to arrive at dealerships this fall, so check current availability before you plan a visit.
What Is New for 2027
The headline change is on the hybrid side. According to Toyota, the Corolla Cross Hybrid lineup goes from three grades to two for 2027, with the S grade dropped and the SE and XSE grades remaining. Across the rest of the lineup, Toyota says features and specifications carry over from the prior model year.
In plain terms: if you were shopping the Corolla Cross Hybrid, you now choose between two well-equipped grades, and both come with standard all-wheel drive. The gas Corolla Cross continues in L, LE, and XLE grades with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Fuel economy figures are manufacturer estimates. Actual mileage will vary with driving conditions, how you drive and maintain your vehicle, and, on the hybrid, battery-pack age and condition.
Gas or Hybrid: The Side-by-Side
Both versions are built on Toyota’s TNGA-C platform and assembled in Huntsville, Alabama. The difference is under the hood and in how power reaches the road.
| Per Toyota | Gas, FWD | Gas, AWD | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | 169 hp | 169 hp | 196 hp total system |
| Drive system | Front-wheel drive | Dynamic Torque Control AWD | Standard Electronic On-Demand AWD (e-AWD) |
| City / highway / combined mpg | 30 / 32 / 31 | 29 / 31 / 30 | 46 / 39 / 42 |
| Towing | 1,500 lbs | 1,500 lbs | 1,500 lbs |
Manufacturer-estimated fuel economy. Actual mileage will vary.
The gas engine has a physical first gear, which Toyota says gives it a straightforward, familiar driving feel. The hybrid pairs Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system with a motor on the rear axle, which is what makes all-wheel drive standard. Curious how that technology works? Read our plain-English guide to Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system.
How the All-Wheel Drive Systems Differ
Gas: Dynamic Torque Control AWD
On gas models with AWD, Toyota says the system can send up to 50 percent of power to the rear wheels when needed and disengages completely when it is not, which helps fuel economy.
Hybrid: e-AWD
On the hybrid, a high-output rear motor drives the rear wheels. Toyota says it works to send drive force rearward during off-the-line starts to help limit front-wheel slip, engages when the front wheels slip, and helps reduce understeer in corners.
A Realistic Expectation
Both systems are built for added traction on slick or loose surfaces, such as a wet commute or a gravel turnout. They are not a substitute for a body-on-frame off-roader if your weekends involve Johnson Valley or the Mojave. Ask us about the right Toyota for that kind of driving.
Space, Seating, and Everyday Use
The Corolla Cross seats five. Toyota lists up to 21.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats on the hybrid, and the 60/40 folding rear seats let you open up more room for gear, groceries, or a Costco run. Inside, Toyota highlights console, center, and door storage and a cockpit designed to be easy to use.
On the towing side, 1,500 pounds is a light-duty rating. It suits a small trailer or a bike carrier setup, not a camper or a loaded utility trailer. If you tow regularly, tell us what you haul and we will point you to a better fit.
Technology and Convenience
Every 2027 Corolla Cross comes with a standard 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Depending on grade and options, Toyota also offers:
- 10.5-inch touchscreen
- 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster
- Qi wireless charging
- Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
- Safe Exit Alert
- JBL premium audio
- Power rear liftgate and moonroof (package)
- Cold-weather package with heated seats
Features vary by grade and powertrain, so confirm what is on the exact Corolla Cross you are considering.
Safety: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 on Every Grade
All 2027 Corolla Cross models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. According to Toyota, the suite includes:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Road Sign Assist
- Automatic High Beams
- Proactive Driving Assist
Toyota also lists the Star Safety System as standard. These systems assist the driver and do not replace attentive driving. For a feature-by-feature look at how the suite works on local roads, see our Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 breakdown for High Desert drivers.
Which One Fits Your Drive?
Hybrid may fit if
You put on a lot of miles, commute toward the Cajon Pass or along the 15, or want standard all-wheel drive without giving up fuel economy. The hybrid’s Toyota-estimated 42 mpg combined is the biggest draw.
Gas may fit if
You prefer the simplest powertrain, want the choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, or put fewer miles on your vehicle each year, so the fuel economy gap matters less to you.
The best way to settle it is to drive both back to back on roads you know. If you are leaning toward a sedan instead, see what’s new on the 2027 Toyota Corolla.
Colors, Warranty, and Care
Toyota offers seven single colors and four two-tone options across the lineup, depending on grade: Celestite, Jet Black, Wind Chill Pearl, Soul Red Crystal, Cavalry Blue, Sonic Silver, and Cypress, with select colors available with a Jet Black roof. Some premium paints carry an additional charge.
Toyota’s limited warranty includes 36 months or 36,000 miles of basic coverage, with the powertrain covered for 60 months or 60,000 miles. On the hybrid, the electric vehicle driving components, including the traction battery, are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. ToyotaCare covers normal factory-scheduled maintenance for one year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first, plus three years of Roadside Assistance.
