2027 Toyota GR86: What’s New for High Desert Driving Enthusiasts

Smoother throttle, a better downshift, new colors and added driver-assist tech, explained for Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley and Adelanto drivers.

The GR86 is the Toyota for drivers who care how a car feels, not just where it goes. For 2027, Toyota says it has fine-tuned the throttle, improved the shift feel, refreshed the interior and expanded the driver-assist technology. If you spend your weekends on mountain roads out of Victorville or the long open stretches toward the Cajon Pass, here is what changed and what stays the same.

What is new on the 2027 Toyota GR86?

According to Toyota, the 2027 GR86 gets a series of refinements rather than a redesign:

  • A refined throttle for a smoother, more linear response
  • Improved fifth-to-fourth downshift feel on the manual
  • New Thunder solid gray exterior color
  • New available Cockpit Red and black interior options
  • Camera recognition range for cruise control nearly doubled
  • A new monocular camera to detect nearby objects at intersections

The manual’s shift change is a small mechanical tweak: Toyota widened the shifter interlock chamfer between fourth and fifth gear by about 0.02 inches to make that downshift feel more seamless.

How much power does the 2027 GR86 make?

The GR86 is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine.

228 hp2.4L boxer four-cylinder, per Toyota
184 lb-ftTorque, peaking at 3,700 RPM
6.1 sec0 to 60 mph, 6-speed manual, per Toyota
6.6 sec0 to 60 mph, 6-speed automatic, per Toyota

Toyota estimates. Performance varies with conditions. Toyota says full specifications and EPA ratings will be shared later in 2026; see fueleconomy.gov for fuel economy.

It is a light car, too. Toyota lists the base manual at 2,811 pounds and the automatic at 2,851 pounds, with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential on both transmissions.

Should a High Desert driver pick the manual or the automatic GR86?

6-speed manual

The manual is the enthusiast’s choice and the quicker of the two to 60 mph, per Toyota. It adds a Track mode and a VSC-off button. If you want the most involvement on a winding road, this is the one.

6-speed automatic

The automatic is an electronically controlled transmission with paddle shifters and Normal, Sport and Snow modes. If your drive includes stop-and-go traffic on the I-15, it takes the work out of the commute, and the Snow mode is a nice option for the rare cold morning.

The best way to decide is to drive both. Schedule a test drive and ask our team to line them up.

What does the GR86 Performance Package add?

The Performance Package is available on both GR86 grades. Toyota says it adds Brembo brakes, with 4-piston front and 2-piston rear calipers and 12.8-inch front rotors, plus SACHS nitrogen and oil-filled dampers. Those upgrades are aimed at drivers who want stronger, more consistent braking and sharper handling, whether on a canyon road or at a track day.

What interior and color updates come with the 2027 GR86?

Toyota adds Thunder, a solid gray that shifts with the light, to the paint palette. Inside, there is a new available Cockpit Red interior with black Ultrasuede, red leather side bolster accents, red floor mats and red door accents. A new black interior option uses black Ultrasuede and black leather-trimmed upholstery with black stitching. The Premium grade also gets a cast iron black finish on its switches, knobs and shifter.

Color and interior availability varies, so ask our team what is on the way.

What safety and driver-assist features does the 2027 GR86 have?

Toyota lists these as standard on all models:

  • Pre-Collision Braking and Pre-Collision Throttle Management
  • Adaptive Cruise Control and Lead Vehicle Start Alert
  • Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag
  • Star Safety System, including Track mode and Hill Start Assist Control

Rear Sonar Warning is available on the Premium grade. Toyota also includes one-year trials of Safety Connect and Remote Connect, which depend on a 4G network.

What comes with owning a GR86?

Toyota includes a complimentary one-year National Auto Sport Association (NASA) membership, with one free High Performance Driving Event. Here is the coverage that comes with it:

Coverage Term, per Toyota
Basic 36 months / 36,000 miles
Powertrain 60 months / 60,000 miles
Corrosion perforation 60 months, no mileage limit
