2027 Toyota Prius and Prius Plug-in Hybrid: What’s New for High Desert Drivers

Hybrid efficiency, available AWD on the hybrid and a plug-in option, explained for Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley and Adelanto commuters.

If you spend real time on the I-15, the Prius is one of the first cars on your list. Toyota has announced the 2027 Prius and Prius Plug-in Hybrid with a short list of updates and the same efficient hybrid system underneath. Here is what is new, what carries over, and what it all means for a drive down the Cajon Pass.

What is new on the 2027 Toyota Prius?

Not a lot, and that is part of the appeal. According to Toyota, the 2027 Prius adds two things: Dual-Zone climate control, so the driver and front passenger can set separate temperatures, and a new black exterior color called Inked. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid gets the same two updates. Everything else carries over from the fifth-generation design.

194 to 196 hpNet combined horsepower, Prius hybrid, FWD and AWD, per Toyota
55 MPGEPA-estimated combined rating, Prius LE FWD
220 hpNet combined horsepower, Prius Plug-in Hybrid, per Toyota
Up to 44 miEPA-estimated all-electric range, Prius Plug-in Hybrid

EPA-estimated and manufacturer figures. Actual mileage and range vary by grade, drive type, driving habits and conditions. See fueleconomy.gov.

How efficient is the 2027 Prius on a Victorville commute?

Toyota lists an EPA-estimated 55 MPG combined for the front-wheel-drive Prius LE, and 53 MPG combined for the LE with all-wheel drive. The hybrid system pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two motor-generators and a lithium-ion battery, and it recovers energy when you brake.

Here is what that looks like for a typical High Desert commute. An 80-mile daily round trip from Victorville to San Bernardino or Ontario adds up to about 20,000 miles over 250 workdays. At 55 MPG, that is roughly 364 gallons for the year, and at 53 MPG it is about 377 gallons. Multiply by today’s price at the pump to see your own number, and check fueleconomy.gov for the exact grade you want, since ratings differ.

Real-world mileage depends on speed, load, temperature, A/C use and how you drive. For commuters through the Cajon Pass and down the I-15, a hybrid can benefit your commute most when the drive is long.

Does the 2027 Prius come with all-wheel drive?

On the Prius hybrid, yes. Toyota says Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive is offered on every Prius hybrid grade. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid is front-wheel drive only. A separate rear-mounted electric motor sends power to the rear wheels when sensors detect slip, which helps with traction on wet roads, gravel and the occasional snow day toward Wrightwood or Big Bear. AWD models make up to 196 net combined horsepower, compared with 194 on front-wheel drive.

AWD helps you get moving, but tires and brakes do the stopping, so keep up with maintenance. Our Toyota tire maintenance guide for High Desert drivers is a good place to start.

What is the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, and how far does it go on electricity?

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid adds a 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery that you charge from an outlet. According to Toyota:

  • 220 net combined horsepower
  • EPA-estimated all-electric range of 39 to 44 miles, depending on grade
  • EPA-estimated 51 MPG combined in hybrid mode on the SE
  • EV, Auto EV/HV and Hybrid modes
  • Runs as a regular hybrid once the battery is used up

For High Desert drivers, the plug-in is a good match for short daily trips around Victorville, Hesperia and Apple Valley, where a full charge can cover errands, school runs and a short commute on electricity alone. A longer drive down the hill to the Inland Empire would use the gas engine for part of the trip, which is where the hybrid system takes over. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid is front-wheel drive. If you want all-wheel drive, that option is on the regular Prius hybrid.

How long does it take to charge a Prius Plug-in Hybrid at home?

Under ideal conditions, Toyota says charging takes about 11 hours on a standard 120-volt household outlet and about 4 hours on a Level 2 charger. The supplied dual-voltage cable plugs into a standard outlet, so you can charge at home without extra equipment. Charging times vary with weather and other factors.
