What Can You Tow With The New Toyota Land Cruiser
The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser can do many things. It can take you anywhere – across the desert, up into the mountains, or a leisurely trip to the beach in San Diego.
Did you also know that it can tow up to 6,000 pounds? Cars.com recently gave the 2024 Land Cruiser a towing test and discovered a few things about how well it would tow.
Most SUVs in their size class usually cap their maximum tow rating at 5,000 pounds. Not the 2025 Land Cruiser. That extra thousand pounds expands the type of trailers it can tow and their usage.
For the Land Cruiser to tow up to 6,000 pounds, you need the power to do so. The i-FORCE MAX turbocharged hybrid driveline offers 465 pound-feet of torque. That’s plenty of power down low in the rev range where you need it. Your Land Cruiser can be equipped with a brake controller, four and seven-pin trailer wiring harness, and a standard hitch.
First, the writers at Cars.com hitched a 4,700-pound travel trailer from the back of the Land Cruiser. The 22-foot long flat-sided trailer is also wider (eight feet) and taller (10 feet), which could challenge some SUVs in terms of aerodynamics. The trailer had a tongue weight of 490 pounds and offered a higher center of gravity.
The Cars.com journalist mentioned that Toyota “recommends using sway control for any load over 2,000 pounds and a weight-distribution hitch for anything over 5,000 pounds. With an as-tested payload rating of 957 pounds, there’s plenty of room for Toyota’s recommended 9%-11% trailer tongue weight.”
As for the testing, Cars.com reported that “at speed, there was minimal sway from the trailer, and it felt stable overall. Driving the four-lane highway with frequent traffic signals wasn’t an issue. Once properly set up, Toyota’s factory trailer brakes worked well in bringing the combination to a smooth stop without additional driver input. Getting up to highway speed also wasn’t an issue thanks to the 465 pounds-feet of torque.”
Towing with a Land Cruiser is definitely possible. Once you unhitch the trailer and set up camp, the real fun happens. With a full-time four-wheel drive system, an available low range, standard CRAWL control, and available Multi-Terrain Select, you can venture away from the campsite and explore the terrain around you. When you break camp, just re-hitch the trailer to your Land Cruiser and take it home. No sweat, right?
