How Much Cargo Fits in a 2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter?
The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner is made for getaways to anywhere. By anywhere, we’re not just talking a road trip to Las Vegas or San Diego. We’re talking up into the San Bernardino Mountains and out towards the Salton Sea.
The question comes up about how much you can pack into the cargo hold of a 2025 4Runner. Edmunds.com does one better: How much can load into the 2025 4Runner Trailhunter?
The Trailhunter is a great new addition to the 4Runner family. This model fulfills the desires of overlanders that use 4Runners for extreme treks off-the-grid. This model adds Old Man Emu suspension components (including 2.5-inch monotube shocks), 33-inch tires designed for extreme terrain, 18-inch alloy wheels, steel underbody protection, frame-mounted rock rails, and an ARB roof rack.
All 2025 4Runner Trailhunters are powered by the new i-FORCE MAX turbocharged hybrid driveline. This driveline puts down 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque with standard part-time four-wheel drive and an electronic locking rear differential. You can also tow up to 5,800 pounds.
While the 2025 4Runner is built for adventure beyond the highway, many will use it as their everyday driver, a road trip machine that can park anywhere, or to simply drop off their friends and family at Ontario or Palm Springs airports for vacation.
Edmunds.com tests the practicality of vehicles by using luggage as a measurement of how the cargo area is utilized. The 2025 4Runner Trailhunter is rated to take up to 42.6 cubic feet of cargo. With that information, Edmunds.com had its test luggage ready.
The team uses a mix of two large suitcases, three carry-on roll-aboard cases, and a medium-sized duffle bag. For this first test, the editors loaded the bags up two ways: stacking them up to the roofliner and spreading them to the rear for outward vision. Either way, they found that there was plenty of room to spare—practically half of the cargo space was open to load more items.
That was not enough for the Edmunds.com team. They added more items, including a 38-quart cooler and two more duffle bags. In one test, they were able to load up to the liftgate with a clear view to the rear window. They also reconfigured the bags and cooler and stacked them towards the side of the cargo hold. Still, there was room to spare.
If you had to start stacking everything higher than the rear window line, the 2025 4Runner Trailhunter is equipped with a rearview camera mirror. Rear visibility is not a problem no matter how you stack everything in the back.
Imagine replacing all of that luggage with camping gear or climbing gear. The 2025 4Runner will take a lot of what you need wherever you go.
